Case Study 5 – Private Life
A young woman reportedly struggled from obesity since her childhood. It all started from her very young age, when she used to indulge in “wrong” foods, which at the time gave her tremendous feelings of satisfaction and fulfilment. That has unfortunately caused her to gain weight and therefore, she was regularly teased and bullied in the school, which has had negative impact upon her personal development. She grew into a very insecure teenager with a tremendously low self-esteem, who always sought approval for anyting she wanted to do.
She painfully admitted that her boy friend was the only man who ever took any notice of her and she only met him in her second year at the university. Luckily, he is the only person who truly understands, loves and accepts her for what she is. In her quest to become “normal”, she has tried every possible diet currently on the market. She has also read several self-development books and has tried few weight loss programmes and all that effort was to no avail. She simply didn’t have self-belief, confidence and persistence to achieve
anything she set herself to do. She also admitted that whenever she made progress in anything she did, she would unconsciously sabotage herself to see that achievement disappear.
She became so delusional with her lack of progress in all aspects of her life that she even decided to accept things as they were and live with them. However, it was her boyfriend, who pushed her to think “outside of the box” and find herself a way out of the situation she was in. He has made initial inquiries with us, explained her situation and asked for our advice. At the beginning, the young lady was not sure as to how our programme could help her, but when she realised that we work on a medium to long term lifestyle changes and behavioural reprogramming, she willingly accepted to give us a try. In our programme, she has learnt about mind/body connection and importance of goals and mental conditioning for its accomplishment. She has also grasped a solid understanding of the connection between thoughts, feelings and food. This awareness influenced her to assume more positive outlook on life, which completely changed her lifestyle and present behavioural patterns.
She is no longer addicted to food, as she has increasingly become confident of her own values, which prompted her to start training for a regional half marathon event, despite her larger frame. As a consequence, she no longer diets or starves herself, but instead chooses to listen to her body and obey its essential needs. She is no longer preoccupied with the size of her waist, because she knows that she didn’t get to where she was in a one day. Instead, she sets herself realistic medium to long term goals in every aspect of her life and daily works on their achievement. Her boyfriend, who is now her husband, is overwhelmed with her progress and mental stability/confidence, which she radiates when she is around. She realises that she is a long way from where she envisages herself to be, but she no longer lacks patience or maturity to reason. She knows she will get where she decided to go regardless of time and effort she plans to put into it. Life is now full of fun and joy for her.
